Born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine, Katya Revenko completed her degree in Fashion Design and Garment Construction at the Ukrainian State Academy of Apparel Industry. Upon graduating she freelanced as a costume designer and wardrobe stylist for several Ukrainian television stations. In 1996, she took first prize in the Rochas Costume Design Contest for the launch of their new perfume, Fleur d’Eau.
After winning, she accepted a placement with Leo Burnett Worldwide, a Top Ten global agency network, styling commercials and music videos. This lead to further involvement with the artists of Ukrainian Records, a division of Universal Records, where Katya was responsible for the general image styling and wardrobe design of various musicians and bands. One of her videos was featured in the MTV Europe Top Ten Chart.
In between such projects Katya produced collections presenting them in unique forums and art installations often collaborating with other notable visual and performance artists. Katya established herself as a force to be reckoned with in the Ukraine, and came to Canada in 2002. She designed costumes for several independent feature films before launching her line with great success. In its first season, Desperately Different was picked up by Holt Renfrew, amongst other retailers, and featured in the World Design Lab. Solidifying her design capabilities, Katya Revenko entered into the Elle Canada and Toronto Fashion Incubator’s New Labels competition and won first prize in March 2006. Very recently Katya was awarded the Fashion Export Award through Style magazine, making her New Designer of the Year.
In October of 2006 Katya presented her line during L’Oreal Fashion Week in an art installation entitled “Le Vernissage de Tragedies” which the Toronto Daily News hailed as one of the most memorable collections of the week.
Desperately Different has received extensive media coverage from many magazines and newspapers such as:
